Mustangs' last defensive stand not enough against No. 15 Tigers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – A late defensive stand on Wednesday nearly fueled a comeback for Morningside women's basketball, but the Mustangs came up just short in a 57-55 battle against No. 15 Dakota Wesleyan.

Morningside held the Tigers to four points in the final 6 minutes, 29 seconds of play to nearly erase a nine-point deficit. During that final stretch, the Tigers were 2 of 8 from the floor, and the Mustangs forced five turnovers.

During that same stretch, the Mustangs made five free throws and three field goals. Overall, the Mustangs were 20-for-57 and made three 3-pointers. They were also 12-for-14 from the free-throw line.

Alexis Spier and Ella Wragge each scored 15 points. Wragge was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line.

Wragge and Lily Vollertsen had 11 rebounds, and the two combined for nine offensively. Morningside controlled the boards, 45-31. 

Chaise Pfanstiel had four steals. 

Morningside is at Hastings on Saturday.
