Strong Defensive Effort Lifts Wildcats Over Peru State
The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team registered a 58-38 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory over Peru State College at Charles Field House Saturday afternoon in Canton, Mo.
A strong defensive effort helped the Wildcats overcome a poor offensive outing in picking up their seventh straight victory at home. C-SC limited the Bobcats to 26 percent shooting overall, including just 20 percent in the first half in jumping out to a 30-17 halftime lead.
The Wildcats held the visitors to just seven field goals on 35 attempts in the opening 20 minutes of action. Peru shot 3-for-15 in the opening quarter and 4-for-20 in the second period. Meanwhile, C-SC made 12 of its 27 field goal attempts in the first half.
A poor shooting third quarter by the Wildcats gave Peru an opportunity to close the gap; however, the Bobcats could only knock three points off the deficit and trailed 39-29 entering the fourth quarter.
A poor third quarter that saw C-SC manage just one field goal gave Peru a chance to cut into the 13-point halftime deficit. But the Wildcats made six free throws in the quarter to offset the six field goals by the Bobcats and the lead was 39-29 heading the to the final quarter.
In the fourth, C-SC tallied outscored the visitors 19-9, holding the Bobcats to three field goals in the period while going 9-for-21 from the field themselves to seal the victory.
The Wildcats placed three players in double figures with Avery Oetting, coming off a carer-high 30 points the game before, leading the way with 13 markers. Elly Bentley and Elizabeth Reed chipped in with 11 points each. Reed's points came off the bench to help the Wildcat bench outscore the Bobcat bench 21-14.
