
Spires Season Opener Falls Short Against Dakota Wesleyan
LEAVENWORTH, KAN. - In their season opener, the University of Saint Mary men's basketball team faced a tough 77-64 loss against Dakota Wesleyan. Despite a strong second-half effort, Saint Mary couldn't overcome a double-digit halftime deficit as Dakota Wesleyan capitalized on efficient shooting and rebounding.
Dakota Wesleyan led 38-27 at the half, propelled by a balanced offensive attack and impressive individual performances. Guard Randy Rosenquist Jr. led all scorers with 22 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field and adding four steals. He was supported by Tampa Scott IV, who contributed 21 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, and Samuel Aslesen, who posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Saint Mary struggled to find their offensive rhythm early on, shooting just 36.1% from the field and 28% from beyond the arc. Damare Smith led the team with 18 points, hitting two three-pointers, while Joey Schultz added 12 points, including a crucial 3-pointer to spark a second-half push. Tre Alexander also provided a boost off the bench, scoring 10 points and converting all six of his free-throw attempts.
Dakota Wesleyan's 50% shooting and dominance on the boards proved to be decisive, as they out-rebounded Saint Mary 37-23, creating extra scoring opportunities that Saint Mary struggled to match. The Spires had bright moments in the second half, cutting into the lead with a more aggressive offensive approach, but Dakota Wesleyan responded each time to maintain a comfortable advantage.
Saint Mary will look to regroup and build on the positives from this challenging opener as they prepare for their next matchup.
