
Baseball Wins GPAC Opener at Midland
Baseball opened conference play on Thursday afternoon with a road trip to Fremont as they faced Midland. The Tigers broke a 3-all tie in the sixth inning and topped the Warriors, 6-4, to win the first game of the doubleheader.
Logan Amick scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning for Doane as he scored on a popup behind second base as Max Harris received a sacrifice fly with the play. Justin Nevells extended the lead in the second inning with a solo home run. Midland tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second and one in the third.
The Tigers regained the lead in the fourth inning with Taiyo Takahashi picking up a sacrifice fly as he plated Sam Kwapnioski. The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with their third sacrifice fly of the game.
Takahashi put Doane back in front in the sixth inning with a two-run single to drive in Harris and Carson Baker. Aaron Vulcano singled in the seventh inning to drive in Carter Roth to push the lead to three runs, 6-3. Midland picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh for the final scoring.
Kaden Crawford started for Doane and went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out one. Raidyn Steele entered the game in the fifth inning with two runners on base but shut down the Warrior offense. He finished with 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit as he picked up the win. Nicolas Yard picked up the save, throwing 1.0 inning as he allowed one unearned run on one hit and one walk while striking out the side (three strikeouts).
The Tigers were held to six hits in the opening game, two coming off the bat of Roth. The team also drew six walks. Six different players scored and Takahashi led the team with three runs batted in.
Game two followed 30 minutes after the opener.
