Union baseball splits doubleheader with Johnson

Knoxville, Tenn. - The Union Commonwealth University baseball team kicked off their three-game conference series against Johnson on Sunday, splitting the first two matchups. The Bulldogs secured a 7-4 victory in game one but fell 12-3 in the second contest.

Game One

Jayden Gonzalez, Ernesto Moreno, and Aaron Barrera each went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Barrera drove in four runs and Gonzalez added one RBI. Gonzalez also hit a home run, while Moreno and Barrera each tallied a double. Moreno crossed the plate twice, and Gonzalez scored once. 

Isaiah Pintor notched two hits, while Tucker Allen, Brendan Hillis, Cooper Tomkinson, and Sean Cherry each contributed one. Cherry recorded an RBI and a run scored, while Pintor touched home twice and Tomkinson added a run. Hillis also hit a double in the contest.

Logan Romasanta earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs, while Dalton Kottmer came in to secure the save. Gunner Bleha also made an appearance on the mound. Romastana recorded two strikeouts, while Bleha notched one.

Game Two

Moreno and Tucker Allen led the Bulldogs' offense, each going 2-for-3 at the plate. Moreno drove in three runs, scored once, and had a home run and a triple. Pintor and Gonzalez also contributed with a hit apiece, each crossing the plate for a run. 

On the mound, Nathan Van Beek got the start for the Bulldogs, with Evan Hiatt, Ethan Warren, Dylan Hetzler, Cameron Schuster, and Eli Sizemore also coming in to pitch. Van Beek, Hetzler, and Sizmore each recorded a strikeout in the outing.

The Bulldogs are now 5-7 (1-3 AAC) this season, while Johnson is 8-3 (1-1 AAC). UCU closes out the series at Johnson with the final game set for Monday, Feb. 24, at 1:00 p.m.
