15-game win streak snapped

Georgetown Women's Basketball saw its 15-game win streak come to an end on Thursday night. The Tigers got off to a slow start and battled foul trouble all night long in a 72-65 loss at Cumberlands.

The 1st quarter of this top-20 matchup was one that both sides would rather forget. Georgetown shot just 4-17 from the floor but led going to the 2nd. Cumberlands missed 15 of its 16 shots in the opener as the Tigers took a 9-6 lead to the 2nd. Despite the lead, the Tigers faced a tough road going forward as Teionni McDaniel picked up 2 fouls in the first 5 minutes of the game and would sit the rest of the half.

Trinity Klock helped move the Tiger offense in the 2nd quarter as she made all 3 of her shots, scoring 6 points in 5 minutes of play, but also picked up her 2nd foul of the half in the process. In total, Georgetown committed 10 fouls in the first half, sending Cumberlands to the line 12 times. The Patriots converted on 10 and despite shooting just 7-30 in the half, they led 26-24 at halftime.

Georgetown's offense got going quickly in the 3rd. Teionni McDaniel hit a jumper after a Trinity Klock offensive rebound. On the next possession, Jordan Rogers connected from deep to give the Tigers a 29-28 lead. Moments later, the Tigers got consecutive layups from Klock and McDaniel for a 34-32 lead with 7:24 to play in the 3rd. The back-and-forth continued to the 6:22 mark when AJ Stevenson hit a 3 to give Georgetown a 38-36 lead. It was the last points Georgetown would score for over 4 minutes. Cumberlands went on a 12-3 run to take a 48-41 lead in the final seconds before a Kayra Freeman layup cut the Tiger deficit to 5 going to the 4th. The Tigers continued to be hampered by fouls as they were whistled 7 times in the 3rd.

After an opening miss in the 4th, Cumberlands hit threes on three straight possessions to take a 57-48 lead with 7 minutes to go. The lead kept growing and reached 16 at 65-49 with just over 4 minutes to play. In that time, Georgetown missed 6 of 8 from the floor and committed 2 turnovers to allow the Patriots to pull away. The Tigers scratched back with a 13-2 run to get within 5 with 90 seconds to play, but Cumberlands hit its free throws down the stretch, not allowing Georgetown to get any closer.

Cumberlands finished the game with a 21-7 edge in points from the free throw line. The Tigers shot just 50% from the line and 27% from beyond the arc. Abby Varney had one of her best days as a Tiger, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Trinity Klock scored 13 and pulled down 6 boards. Teionni McDaniel never got in a rhythm because of fouls and finished with 12 points in just 18 minutes of action.

Georgetown now has a week to prepare for another tough road trip as they head to Campbellsville next Thursday. Tip time is set for 5:30pm.
