
Winfield Hits Three Home Runs in Game One as SMC Drops Doubleheader to Cumberland
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With temperatures in the 40's, there was not a shortage of offense in the doubleheader between Cumberland and Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday.
The Phoenix outslugged the Pioneers in game one, winning 13-12. The win spoiled a three-home run and eight RBI effort by SMC left fielder Parker Winfield.
After a scoreless first inning, the two teams each plated two in the second. Cumberland added two for a 4-2 lead in the third; then, the Pioneers took their first lead of the game on the second when Winfield hit a three-run home run.
With SMC leading 5-4, the Phoenix clawed back with a run each in the fifth and sixth for a 6-5 lead. Again, the game continued to be back and forth as SMC plated three in its half of the inning to regain the lead. This time, the big blast was a three-run home run by Brady Jeffcoat for the Pioneers.
Cumberland took back the lead in the seventh with five runs. The lead was not safe as SMC came back with four – three of which came in on the second three-run homerun of the day by Winfield - in the bottom half of the inning. SMC took the lead on an RBI single by Hunter Lancaster in the inning.
The Phoenix mounted a comeback, tying it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly. The visitors completed the comeback when Trenton Duchscherer hit a two out solo home run in the ninth. Cumberland retired the Pioneers for the win.
For the Pioneers, Winfield finished the game, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and eight RBI. Teammates Matt Smith had three hits and Jarian Pinckney and Justin Dawkins had a pair as SMC had 13 hits in the loss.
The nightcap saw Cumberland erase a 2-0 deficit thru the first two innings to score the next 14 – including seven in the fourth – on its way to a 14-6 win over the Pioneers. Three-different players for the Phoenix had multiple hits in the win. SMC had eight hits in the nightcap.
Jarian Pinckney, who hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, had two hits and three RBI to lead the offense. Chance Greene also had two hits with a solo home run in the sixth for the Pioneers.
With Pinckney leading off the bottom of the first with a solo home run for the early lead. The Pioneers added a run in the second on a RBI ground out by Leo Lopez for the 2-0 lead.
The visitors stranded five base runners in the first two innings before getting on the scoreboard in the third. Then, Cumberland took its first lead of the nightcap with a seven-run fourth inning. They added to their lead with three more runs in the fifth on its way to a 11-2 lead en route to the 14-6 win. SMC scored three times in the bottom of the seventh for the final margin.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a final game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mooneyham Field.
