Eagles Fall Short in Tough Battle Against Southwest

HOBBS, N.M. – The Texas A&M University-Texarkana women's basketball team faced the University of the Southwest on Saturday afternoon in a Red River Athletic Conference matchup, falling to the Mustangs, 65-53.

The Eagles got off to a strong start, outscoring the Mustangs 20-11 in the first quarter. However, Southwest surged in the second, cutting into TAMUT's lead and heading into halftime trailing by just one point. After the break, the Mustangs ramped up their defensive intensity, holding the Eagles to just eight points in the third quarter and taking control of the game. Southwest sealed the win with their highest-scoring quarter of the day, outscoring TAMUT 24-14 in the fourth.

Kayla Williams led the Eagles with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Chi'onne Dailey added 10 points. Despite their efforts, TAMUT struggled offensively, shooting just 23.7% from the field compared to Southwest's 35%. Costly turnovers and Southwest's efficient free-throw shooting (83.3%) proved to be decisive.

The Eagles will travel to Tyler, Texas, on Saturday, Feb. 1, for their next RRAC matchup against Texas College. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
