Cougars Earn Dominating 4-0 Win Over Defiance in Season Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's soccer team celebrated the start of its 30th season with a 4-0 victory over the visiting Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday, August 17.
Prior to the start of Saturday night's game, USF women's soccer honored alumni in an on-field ceremony to celebrate 30 seasons.
In both teams' first match of the 2024 season, the Cougars and Yellow Jackets played to a scoreless tie through the first 22 minutes until sophomore Evelyn Harkenrider pushed past the defense to find Haley Roberson who placed the ball in the back of the net for USF's first goal of the night. Less than two minutes later, Grace Morris took the ball away and scored with a deep strike from about 25 yards. USF would continue to hold off the Yellow Jackets to go into halftime on top 2-0.
With 54:15 left on the clock in the second half of Saturday night's game, Morris would again find the back of the net for her second goal of the night. Grace Hein assisted on the goal. Courtney Tobin scored the Cougars' fourth and final goal with 69 minutes to play. Tobin led USF with 13 total shots during the match, seven of which landed on goal.
Saint Francis dominated on the pitch, outshooting Defiance 36-1 while taking all 15 corner kicks during Saturday's matchup.
Saint Francis women's soccer (1-0) will return to action on Tuesday, August 20 with a road match at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Cougars' next home match is slated for Sunday, August 25 against the University of St. Francis (Ill.).
