WAU Women’s Basketball Falls to Haskell Indian Nations in WAU CAC Classic opener
Takoma Park, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team faced a tough challenge in the opening game of the WAU CAC Classic, falling 72-58 to Haskell Indian Nations University on Friday night at The Pitt.
The Shock battled hard throughout the contest, but Haskell's efficient offense and strong defense proved too much to overcome. WAU started strong, keeping the game close in the first half, thanks to Amani Ball's contributions, who led the team with a double-double, recording 17 points, ten rebounds, three assists, and two rebounds. However, Haskell's ability to control the tempo and capitalize on the Shock's 23 turnovers helped them maintain their lead, taking a 35-28 lead into the break.
In the second half, WAU fought valiantly to close the gap, with key plays from Tye Queen and a solid effort on the boards. Despite their efforts, Haskell's sharp shooting and timely stops secured the 72-58 conference win.
The Shock shot 26.5 percent (18-of-68) from the field, with three of its makes coming from long range. Along with Ball, Queen (12), Deryanis Colon Velez (8), Melanie Aguilar (7), Isabela Lujan-Gonzales (6), Bethany Fowler (3), Sanaa Morrow (3), and Abby Bryant (2) also found the scoring column. Eight Shock players saw time on the floor.
The Shock will look to bounce back in their next game of the WAU CAC Classic as they aim to defend their home court and regain momentum heading into the heart of the season. WAU will face Fisher College on Saturday, January 18 in Takoma Park, MD at 7:15 p.m.
