
Volleyball Goes 1-1 in McPherson
(McPherson, KS) – Playing a back-to-back against McPherson and MidAmerica Nazarene, Hastings responded from a 3-0 loss to McPherson (23-25, 15-25, 16-25) by beating MidAmerica Nazarene 3-0 (28-26, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday.
McPherson took the first set in a tight one 25-23, despite Hastings having 8 more attacks. The Bulldogs pulled away in set two to win 25-15. The Broncos again had more attacks in the set, but committed more errors.
In the third set, the Bulldogs were very aggressive as they totaled 18 kills in the set to Hastings' nine, winning the final period 25-16.
Freshman Mikah O'Neill led the way for the Broncos in kills with 10 for the game. Junior Alexis Pontine had 23 assists and senior Miriam Miller had 16 digs in the 3-0 loss.
In the second match, Hastings prevailed in a long opening set, winning 28-26. The Broncos fought off three set points and won the last three points to claim the set as senior Majesta Valasek had two kills and a block assist in those three points.
Though it was a pretty even second set, Hastings trailed 17-13, but got back into the set with four straight points. Tied at 23-all, the Pioneers missed on a serve, then freshman Lainey Benson came up with an ace to take the second set 25-23.
The Broncos trailed 7-3 early in the third set, but went on a 10-1 run to steal the momentum, as they led 13-8. Hastings would never lead by less than five the rest of the way, cruising to a 25-19 third set win.
For the match, O'Neill led the team with 12 kills, along with 11 kills from Valasek. Miller led the team with 23 digs, while senior Dacey Sealey also had 15 digs. Pontine finished the match with 31 assists.
Up next, Hastings will continue their road trip on Saturday, September 14 at College of Saint Mary in Omaha, NE. The match will start at 3pm in the Lied Fitness Center.
