Jackets swept by Cornerstone to start weekend
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Defiance Yellow Jackets started their weekend trip to Grand Rapids with a three-set defeat to the Cornerstone Golden Eagles at Mol Arena on Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (7-8, 1-3 WHAC) carried an .070 hitting percentage through the match that was pulled down due to 19 attack errors while the Golden Eagles (8-5, 2-2 WHAC) enjoyed a .383 average for the contest with at least 14 kills in each set. Defiance has also lost 5 of 6 matches following a 6-3 start to the campaign.
THE TURNING POINT
The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 13-2 start before cruising to a first set win. In the second set, the Yellow Jackets played tough to a 12-11 deficit before a six-point rally by Cornerstone. The third set saw DC remain within one until the 18-17 mark when Cornerstone went on a five-point burst to come within one point of clinching the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The three-set loss was just the second such loss of the season for the Yellow Jackets.
- Jamia Murray led DC in kills for the third straight match with nine. She also registered six digs on the defensive end.
- Chaney Brodbeck notched a team-best nine digs, followed by Shelby Clements with six more to match Murray.
- Amina Chamoun notched 13 assists to lead the way in the passing game.
