Bruins Advance to Championship for First Time
SIOUX CITY, IOWA - [Box Score] - In the NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship semifinal match, the Bellevue (Neb.) Bruins emerged victorious over the Corban (Ore.) Warriors in a thrilling three-set (25-20, 28-26, 26-24) victory.
The teams battled for control of the first set until Bellevue opened things up with an 11-1 run. Corban closed the gap to three points but the Bruins had enough cushion to win the opening set 25-20.
The second set was the most highly contested of the match, with 19 ties and nine lead changes. The teams pushed past 25 points before deciding a winner but at 26 all, the Bruins capitalized on a couple of Warrior errors to win the second set 28-26.
The teams picked up where they left off in set two to open set three and matched each other blow for blow before a 6-1 run, which gave Corban a little bit of separation. The Bruins were never far behind and made their move at 14-18 with a 5-1 run to tie the score at 19. The teams traded scores once again as Bellevue tied things up at 24 with a kill by Sidney Sledge and went on to close out the match with a Corban error and kill from the hand of Sledge once again.
Bellevue's offense was firing on all cylinders, with key players like Eve Fountain, Sidney Sledge, and Savanna Berger leading the charge. Fountain recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Sledge and Berger added nine kills each, alongside impressive attack percentages of .444 and .412, respectively. Setter Victoria Runyan dished out 19 assists to keep the offense running smoothly.
On the other side of the net, Corban's Makayla Roginski and Emma Bischoff lead the team offensively with 12 kills each. Roginski only recorded one attacking error in the match for an impressive .423 attack percentage. The Warriors were led defensively by Nadeiah Howard with 15 digs and Marissa Uehara with 11 digs of her own.
With this win, Bellevue advances to the NAIA Women's Volleyball Championship match for the first time, where they will continue their Battle for the Red Banner. They will face the winner of the second semifinal, Indiana Wesleyan vs Southern Oregon, on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT.
