SAU rallies to defeat Trinity Christian in five sets
Down two sets and trailing 12-2 in the third, St. Ambrose somehow rallied for a 27-29, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-9 win at Trinity Christian Thursday night.
Facing the huge deficit, the Bees battled back and ultimately drew even at 21-21 in the third after back-to-back kills from Ella Gatz and Grace Beitzel. After a Troll point, kills from Beitzel and Trenyce Bonner gave the Bees their first lead of the set at 23-22. Trinity Christian (7-19, 3-6 CCAC) pulled even at 23-23 before kills from Bonner and Adriana Diaz forced a fourth set.
St. Ambrose (11-14, 5-5 CCAC) led throughout the fourth, maintaining a two- or three-point lead for most of the set. TCC closed within a single point four times late, but each time, SAU had the answer. Finally, leading 24-23, a Beitzel kill extended the match to a decisive fifth set.
The final set was tied as late as 4-4 before the Bees finally started to pull away. Another Beitzel kill and back-to-back TCC errors, gave SAU a 7-4 advantage. Trinity got within 7-6 before a six-point surge basically ended the match. Diaz had two kills and paired with Gatz on a block during the run that put St. Ambrose in front 13-6. Kills from Diaz and Bonner ultimately closed out the comeback win.
Three different Bees reached double-digit kills. Beitzel led all players with 16 kills while Mackenzie Grafton had 14 and Bonner finished with 13. Diaz was credited with seven kills, Kylie Brosius had three, and Kennedy Hugunin and Gatz had two each.
Haley Doucet (25) and Ines Marques (24) combined for 49 of the team's 58 assists. Kenia Diaz Vega recorded seven assists to go along with a match-best 25 digs. Doucet had 10 digs, Diaz registered eight and Grafton picked up six.
Diaz Vega, Diaz, Doucet, Marques and Devyn Church each had an ace.
The Bees have a break before returning to action Oct. 29 at home against IU-Northwest.
