Women's Basketball Succumbs to Mo. Valley in OT; Katie Webb Nets 1,000th Career Point

The Culver-Stockton College women's basketball team made was outscored 7-4 in overtime as Missouri Valley earned a 60-57 Heart of America Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night at Charles Field House.

The Wildcats shot 2-for-10 from the field in the extra period while the Vikings went 2-for-5 in the overtime. The difference came at the four line where the Vikings were 3-for-4 while C-SC did not  attempt a free throw in overtime.

The poor shooting was the theme of the night as the two team combined to shoot 10-for-69 in the first half that ended with the Wildcats leading 15-12. In fact, Missouri Valley had more offensive rebounds (16) than points in the opening 20 minutes.

The shooting heated up in the third quarter as the Missouri Valley hit on 57.1 percent of its field goal attempts and outscored the Wildcats 29-23 to take a 41-38 lead to the final quarter.

In the fourth, the visitors built its biggest lead of eight points early in the quarter but the Wildcats rallied late to take a 49-48 lead on a basket by Misora Nambara with three minutes to play.

The Vikings regained the lead with an offensive rebound and a subsequent 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, but Nambara tied it again at 51 with 69 seconds remaining.

MVC made it 53-51 with 52 seconds left but again it was Nambara who came to the rescue and tied the game with 31 seconds remaining.

After a time out, the Vikings played for the last shot and missed with three seconds left. C-SC grabbed the rebound but could only manage a desperation shot at the buzzer.

In the overtime, each team scored on their initial possessions of the overtime to bring the score to 55 all. After C-SC's basket by Elly Bentley tied the game at 55, she was fouled after the shot and the Wildcats got the ball out of bounds.

Katie Webb, who scored her 1,000th career point earlier in the fourth quarter, got an offense outback to give C-SC its only lead of the overtime.

The Vikings split a pair of free throws to bring them within 57-56 and then both teams went cold from the field for the next three minutes before another miss and offensive rebound by the Vikings gave the guests a 58-57 lead with 38 seconds left on OT. 

After a timeout, C-SC's Nambara missed a 3-point attempt with eight seconds left and MVC grabbed the carom. The Vikings made two more free throws with four seconds left to up the lead to three.

The Wildcats had one last chance to send the game to a second extra session; however, Nambara's 3-pointer came up short of the mark.

Webb led four players in double figures with 16 points ands added nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Webb is the 26th player and the first since Payton Curley in 2021 to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. 

Avery Oetting recorded 15 points and Nambara and Bentley registered 10 markers, while Leilani Harworth grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds off the bench.

C-SC will attempt to end a three-game home losing streak this Wednesday, Feb. 5, when they host Clarke University at Charles Field hzoue. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
