
Conference battle in Kansas results in close loss for St. Ambrose
Saturday afternoon, the Bees traveled to Ottawa, Kan., to take on Ottawa University. St. Ambrose, coming off a conference loss in Missouri, looked to pick up a conference win in this matchup but fell short with their fourth-quarter comeback losing the game 18-16.
Coming into this match, Ottawa was ranked second in the Heart Conference, coming off a loss to No. 1 Benedictine and looked to bounce back on home turf. Despite Saige Carlton's nine saves, Ottawa opened up the game on a mission, scoring six goals. The Bees were held scoreless this quarter losing 6-0.
SAU found its first goal early in the second quarter with Katie McGlynn putting it away. The Braves answered back with two more goals to put them up 8-1. Cailey Kramer followed it up with a goal shortly after for the Bees, but the Braves exchanged it with another goal for them. Down by seven, the Bees found momentum going on a four-goal run starting with another Kramer goal. McGlynn followed it up for her second goal of the day. With two minutes left, Anabelle Brown notched one in on a free-position shot. The final goal coming from Karsen Jummati on a free-position shot with 10 seconds left. With the St. Ambrose run, the Bees trailed 9-6 going into the half.
The second half started slow with the first goal coming from Ottawa. Halfway through the quarter the Bees were able to find the back of the net with Brown connecting with McGlynn for a man-up goal. Two minutes later, Jummati found the net again with the assist coming from Delaney Cunningham putting the Bees down 10-8. Ottawa put a halt to the scoring with a goal of their own, but McGlynn answered back with another goal with the feed coming from Brown. Ending the third quarter the Bees were trailing 11-9.
In an exciting fourth quarter of runs, Ottawa scored first with two quick goals. Down 13-9, the Bees went on a six-goal run to take the 15-13 lead. Krammer started it off with her third goal of the game, shortly followed by Brown scoring off the draw control. Jummati won the following draw control and put the ball in the back of the net. After an Ottawa timeout the Bees scored again with Brown taking it to the goal to tie it up. Abby Tazffe scored the goal to take the lead for SAU with a pass coming from Brown. Brown scored the final goal for the Bees six-goal run. St. Ambrose up 15-13, Ottawa scored to bring it to a one goal game. With four minutes left, Jummati scored on a free-position shot to bring the lead up 16-14. After a St. Ambrose timeout, Ottawa scored four unanswered goals to take the lead and finish the game 18-16 in favor of the Braves.
In an intense battle, the Bees had some great play. On the offensive side St. Ambrose had three different players score four goals coming from Brown, McGlynn, and Jummati. Additionally, Kramer had three goals while Taaffe notched one. Brown was distributing the ball totaling three assists while Cunningham had one. Carlton held it down on defense making 19 saves.
After this close loss, the Bees are ranked 5th in conference with a 3-2 record. St. Ambrose looks to battle back Thursday night as they take on Mount Mercy in another conference matchup at St. Vincent Athletic Complex.
