SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Avila women's basketball hit the road on Tuesday in search of its first win of the campaign at Mission. The Eagles kept it within one in the first quarter and outscored the Patriots in the second half, but it was a bad second quarter that led to Avila's ultimate 87-76 loss.
Avila entered the second quarter trailing 21-20 after the first 10 minutes of the contest behind 9-of-16 shooting and two three pointers made.
Mission took control in the second quarter, outscoring Avila 27-14. Eight Avila turnovers in the second quarter played a part in Mission's 30 points off turnovers throughout the entire game.
The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and outscored the Patriots by three points, eventually bringing it to within three with 90 seconds remaining before Mission pulled away in the final minute.
Marlie Wright finished with 18 points for Avila and was one rebound away from her second double-double of the season. Madilyn Melton led all scorers with 19 points and added five rebounds.
In total, Avila had four players in double-figures and outshot Mission in the game. Avila also outrebounded Mission, 41-29.
However, the Eagles 25 turnovers in the game were more than double the Patriots' total of 11.
Avila's next regular season game is Wednesday, November 13 at Cottey at 6:30 PM.
