Softball Swept by Trojans

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. The Mount Vernon Nazarene University softball team (7-4, 0-2 CL) had its home opener at the Cougar Softball Field against Taylor University (11-3, 2-0 CL) on Tuesday, March 11.

 

Game 1 Summary:

The Trojans were hot in game one of the doubleheader, collecting nine hits that turned into eight runs. Taylor jumped on the Lady Cougars early and never looked back. MVNU found itself down 0-3 after the first inning. Taylor added two runs in the second and three more in the third. MVNU was unable to get anything going offensively, falling in five innings by a finals score of 0-8.

 

Game 2 Summary:

Trailing 1-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth, MVNU erupted for five runs to claim a 6-4 lead. Sydney Hoover hit a single that scored Avery Miller, Mollie Pentz then hit a bases-clearing triple that scored Hoover, Brooklyn Krum, and Kiera Mayer, and Zhari Hill scored Pentz after a double to centerfield.

Taylor responded to MVNU's scoring surge with one of its own, plating eight runs in the top of the sixth to claim a 12 6 lead. MVNU battled back in the bottom of the frame with four runs to cut into the Taylor lead and make it a two-run game. Miller hit a two-run homer, followed by a Sydney Elliott pinch-hit double that scored Shanda Melick and Skylar Zimmerman, making the score 10-12. In the bottom seventh, MVNU got runners on second and third with two outs, but it could not find the game-tying runs, falling by a final of 10-12.

 

What's Next:

MVNU hosts Huntington University for a doubleheader at the Cougar Softball Field on Friday, March 14. Game one is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
