Mount Mercy snaps Men's Basketball winning streak
Mount Mercy University earned their fourth straight win over Benedictine Men's Basketball on Saturday afternoon, snapping the Ravens 3-game winning streak.
The Mustangs hit 13 3-pointers, three off their season-high set earlier in the week en route to a 75-69 win over the Ravens.
Haggen Hilgendorf opened the game, scoring the Ravens first 5 points before back-to-back 3-pointers from Harrison Kisling and Brycen LaRue gave the Ravens a 17-9 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. Over the next three minutes, Mount Mercy held Benedictine to just 3 points as they erased the Ravens lead and pulled ahead 21-20. Over the next 5 minutes, the game played through three ties and 4 lead changes before Ezrah Viagafa put Benedictine up 37-32 with 1:15 remaining in the half. Mount Mercy hit back-to-back 3-pointers of their own, the final of which came at the halftime buzzer to take a 41-39 lead into the break.
It took the Ravens under 2 minutes into the second half to erase the halftime deficit and LaRue connected on a pair of 3-pointers. Mount Mercy answered with a pair of their own 3-pointers before Benedictine scored 7 straight to pull ahead by 5 points with 15 minutes left in the game. Mount Mercy used an 11-0 run to pull ahead of the Ravens by 6 points and that proved to be a lead the Ravens could not overcome.
LaRue pulled Benedictine within 4 points with just over 2 minutes remaining in the game, but that would be as close as they could get as the Mustangs hit 6 free throws over the final 2 minutes to seal the win.
LaRue led three Ravens in double figures with 19. Jack Vander Woude finished with 11 points while Hilgendorf finished with 10.
Mount Mercy finished with a 10-7 advantage in second-chance scoring while outrebounding the Ravens 42-36. Benedictine finished at 46.7 percent from the free throw line, shooting 7 of 15.
Benedictine closes out the semester on Tuesday in Canton, Mo., against Culver-Stockton at 6 p.m.
