
(RV) Mustangs Sweep Broncos at Home
(Hastings, NE) – Looking to build off of their game two win against Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, the Mustangs had other plans, as they took game one, 16-4, and game two, 17-2.
Both teams had the bases loaded with one out in the first inning but came up empty. With one out in the top of the second, Morningside hit back-to-back triples and grounded a single to left to go up 2-0. They added another run later in the inning with two outs to take a 3-0 lead.
Hastings got one run back in the bottom half of the inning with senior Mason Masur tripling to center to begin the inning and coming home on an RBI groundout from senior Dylan Otto. Hastings managed to get the bases loaded again with one out moments later but could not capitalize.
The third inning saw the Mustangs score four more runs to go up 7-1. Hastings got the bases loaded with one out for a third straight inning but the Morningside managed to strand the runners once more.
Morningside extended the lead to 11-1 in the fourth and added a 12th run in the fifth to go up 11. Otto got his second RBI of the game in the fifth on a single to right, making it 12-2, after Masur and senior Elijah Merritt reached to start the half inning.
Both teams scored a run in the sixth, as senior Caleb Duinink scored the Bronco run with an RBI groundout to score junior Coletin Renn. After a three-run home run by the Mustangs in the seventh, junior Jake Poris cranked one over the left field wall to make the final game one score 16-4.
In game two, Morningside singled and advanced to second and third on a failed pickoff attempt, eventually scoring on a single to go up 1-0. They scored a second run in the third inning with one out on a single to right, then scored nine runs on seven hits in the fourth to take an 11-0 lead. The Mustangs tacked on four more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to go up 16-0.
Senior Alliskair Descartes singled up the middle in the bottom of the sixth and moved up to second on a single from Renn. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch and Descartes scored on a groundout from junior Jaden Stone to get on the board. Senior Tyler Welsh came on to pinch-hit and hit a grounder deep to third, whose throw was offline at first and led to the second run to make it 16-2. The Mustangs added a run in the seventh to make the final score 17-2.
Up next, Hastings will play at Nebraska Wesleyan tomorrow evening for a single game beginning at 6pm.
