Baker strong, bats quiet in loss at CU

Chad Baker started his 6th game of the season at Campbellsville on Friday. He delivered his 5th quality start but took another loss as Georgetown's bats could not solve Campbellsville's pitching in a 5-1 defeat to start the 3-game series.

Peyton Young started the game with a leadoff double to left. He moved to 3rd on a groundout from Jarrett Chapman. Jose Cazorla then followed with a grounder to 1st that scored Young and gave Georgetown a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Young's double was 1 of just 3 hits on the day for Georgetown. Campbellsville put pressure on Chad Baker in the bottom of the 1st. CU put 2 runners on, but Baker was able to work out of it unscathed.

Both teams would go down in order in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Aidan Jbara singled in the 4th for Georgetown but nothing else materialized. Campbellsville put pressure on again in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk and infield put runners at 1st & 2nd. A fielder's choice followed that wound up in a double play to end the threat.

After a 1-2-3 top of the 5th, Campbellsville was able to break through on Chad Baker. 2 singles started the inning. The runners moved up 90 feet after a sac bunt. Georgetown intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases with 1 out. Baker got the next batter on a pop up. A base hit toward 3rd base followed to score the tying run. Campbellsville tried for the lead but the 2nd runner was cut down at the plate to end the inning tied at 1.

Georgetown went down in order again in the 6th. Campbellsville did not. A leadoff single started a rally. After a strikeout, Baker hit the next batter to put 2 on. A single to center loaded the bases. The next batter hit a grounder in the 5-hole, leaving Georgetown no choice but to take the force at 3rd and allow the go-ahead run to score for a 2-1 CU lead after 6.

Ashton Deskins came on for Baker in the 7th. Campbellsville put runners on 2nd & 3rd, but Deskins struck out the final batter to leave the insurance runs stranded. Georgetown went down in order for the 4th straight time in the 8th. Campbellsville took advantage and played add-on. A 2-run double and sacrifice fly pushed Campbellsville's lead to 5-1. Jarrett Chapman singled in the top of the 9th but Georgetown went down again to end the game.

Chad Baker took his 3rd loss of the year, despite allowing just 2 runs in 6 innings on 88 pitches. Ashton Deskins pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 runs (1 earned). David Edwards pitched the final 2 outs of the 8th, allowing a hit and run.

The teams will finish the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1:00pm.
