Mustangs Swipe Bags and Sweep the Doubleheader with St. Ambrose

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Mustangs took care of business on Sunday, sweeping the doubleheader with St. Ambrose, 4-3 and 10-5.

Game One

The story of the game would the Mustangs swiping bags on the base paths, as the Mustangs would swipe eight bases, including a steal of home. Tyler Pecson would lead the pack with four stolen bases, tying the school record for stolen bases in a game by an individual. The eight stolen bases by the Mustangs ranks second in school history, just one shy of tying the mark, set back in 2012.

SAU would get the scoring started, taking a two run lead in the third inning as Joey Fitzgerald drove in a run on a sacrifice fly while Brandon Roth drove in a run on an RBI. The Mustangs would then answer in the third, as Jaden Hackbarth scored on an error by the Bees second baseman. Pecson would come across to score on a single to the pitcher to tie the game. The Bees would answer in the sixth, as Brandon Matias homered to left center, as they would take a one run lead.

In the bottom of sixth, Pecson would swipe home on a beautiful play as he caught the Bees napping on the catcher's throw back to second on a play worthy of being featured on ESPN. In the seventh, Einertson would drive in the game winning run on a walkoff sacrifice fly to right, scoring Bryce Brown.

Tyler Nagelbach earned the win, improving his record to 2-1, pitching all seven innings and allowing eight hits and striking out one. Brad Niedwiedz would be tabbed with the loss, pitching an inning of relief while allowing one run.

Game Two

The Mustangs offense would erupt in game two, scoring ten unanswered runs to start off the game. Bryce Brown would get the offense going in the bottom of the first, blasting a no doubt shot to left, scoring Notriano. Derek Einertson would then double to center, scoring Pecson, while Griffen Bushnell drove in Einertson on a single to right as the Mustangs would end the first inning up by four.

In the third, Einertson drove in two more, scoring Pecson and Brown, while Dennis drove in his second run of the game to extend the Mustang lead to seven at the end of three innings. The Mustang offense would end the scoring in the fourth, as Brown singled to second, scoring Hackbarth, while Einertson drove in his fourth RBI of the game, and Brown would follow that up by scoring on a wild pitch, making it a 10 run game.

The Bees offense got started in the seventh as Daniel Laughery would score on an error by the Mustangs second baseman. Jake Pauley would drive in a run on a groundout to the pitcher, and Noah Chase would blast a three run shot to make the game interesting, but ultimately the Bees weren't able to overcome the large deficit, as the Mustangs earned their second straight win, and their third of the home weekend.

Jack Turgasen earned the win, pitching a phenomenal 5.2 innings while allowing just three hits and striking out eight. Joe Evans was tabbed with the loss, pitching three innings and allowing seven runs and striking out four.

The Mustangs will open Heart of America play with a road trip to Parkville, Missouri, taking on Park next weekend, with the series slated to start on Saturday.
