Columbus, MS- After 300 days of Lady Pioneer Volleyball drought, CRC officially took to the court this evening in their season opener against the Lady Owls of Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, MS. After four sets, the Lady Pioneers would be faced with their first setback of the season as the Pioneers claimed the opening set before dropping three straight to the hosting Lady Owls. Sets went as follows, 25-17 CRC, 19-25 MUW, 21-25 MUW, 16-25 MUW.
In CRC's only set win of the contest, the Lady Pioneers united midway through the set to overcome a four-point deficit and overtake the Lady Owls, besting them 25-17. In set two, CRC doubled their kill effort but a stout Owl counter kept the Pioneers at bay long enough to even the set score before sneaking past the Pioneers in set three with a big four-point swing late in the set, swinging the advantage in MUW favor. The Owls ended the contest in the fourth set by posting their biggest offensive attack of the game, outsmashing the Lady Pioneers in kills, 15-9.
Newcomer Brooklyn Cross led the Lady Pioneers offensively with a double-digit effort of 10 kills on an impressive .308 hitting percentage. Freshman Alyssa Dirden led in digs with 15 as sophomore Mallory Hollis followed with 14. Jillian Glasgow dished out a team-high 17 helpers with CRC's all-time assist leader Jadyn Hesse chasing with 14. Hesse and Hollis each added two aces to the CRC cause.
