Southern Oregon Makes History with Quarterfinal Win

SIOUX CITY, IOWA - [Box Score] - In a riveting match-up between the Southern Oregon Raiders and the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, Southern Oregon claimed the 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12) victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship.

The teams matched each other in nearly every statistical category except for attack attempts (SOU 47: EOU 42) and service errors (EOU 1: SOU 0) in the first set through 12 scoring ties. Throughout the set, Eastern Oregon was the only one to put together a scoring run of more than three points until Eastern Oregon opened the floodgates and went on a five-point run that evened things out at 21 apiece. With a kill from Megan Perry, Southern Oregon answered with a 4-1 run of their own to close out the set 25-22.

Southern Oregon rode the momentum from the first set win and held a narrow lead of 9-7 at the start. Eastern Oregon tied things up at nine after a kill from Kiauna Mack and Keira Vaughn that shifted the momentum to the Mounties, who would go on a 9-3 run to gain a six-point advantage.  EOU maintained that lead and tied the match score at one set apiece with a 25-21 set two win.

Southern Oregon took an initial 6-4 lead in set three but EOU stayed close behind until 14-15 when Keira Vaughn got a kill that sparked a six-point run that put the Mounties up four points. Eastern Oregon maintained that lead to close out the set 25-20.

The teams traded the lead at the start of the fourth set, but at 5-5, SOU went on a 10-1 run for a nine-point lead. Eastern Oregon still challenged the Raiders and started to close the scoring gap with a 7-1 scoring run, and a few points later, a four-point scoring run would close the scoring gap to three points. However, Southern Oregon stayed steady and never allowed the Mounties to surpass them before reaching 25 points.

The Raiders kept Eastern Oregon at bay in the fifth set and never allowed EOU to take the lead in the fifth set despite a late comeback attempt that put Eastern Oregon within two points on set and match point. A kill from Marin Macky brought home the 15-12 win for Southern Oregon. The Raiders held the Mounties to their lowest attack percentage in the set of .050.

Southern Oregon was led by Hannah Stadstad, who put up 23 kills, as well as Megan Perry, who had 14 kills of her own. Defensively, the Raiders were led in the backcourt by Kayla Neidigh with 17 digs, followed by Marin Mackey with 14 digs.

Key players for Eastern Oregon included Keira Vaughn with 19 kills, Madison Morgan with 12 kills, and Hannah Ledgerwood with 15 digs.

With the win, Southern Oregon advances to the semifinals for the first time in championship history. The Raiders will play defending national champion Indiana Wesleyan at 8 p.m. CT Monday, December 9.
