Hot-shooting Dakota Wesleyan handles CSM

MITCHELL, S.D. – College of Saint Mary fell victim to a hot-shooting Dakota Wesleyan University squad Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers shot 62.1% in the first half en route to a 49-13 halftime lead and eventually a 90-49 Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball win at the famed Corn Palace.

DWU improved to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the GPAC with the win, while CSM dropped to 1-14 and 0-9.

The Tigers made 18 of 29 of their first-half field goals, including 5 of 8 (62.5%) from 3-point range, to go with 8 of 10 at the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Flames made just 6 of 24 (25.0%) from the field, including 1 of 6 (16.7%) from beyond the arc.

CSM Coach Natalie Miller said her team has been trying some different defensive tactics.

"We tried out a new defense, which the ladies adjusted to in moments and gave us some good spurts, so that was good to see that buy-in with something new,'' she said. "It's something we'll continue to work on.''

Haley Debuse paced the Flames with 15 points to go with two blocks and a pair of rebounds. Freda Moore added seven points and shared the team lead in rebounds with Maura Tichota with six.

"Freda did a great job of being aggressive and getting to the free-throw line,'' Miller said. "She brought tons of energy to the team. Defensively, she was everywhere.''

Dakota Wesleyan outrebounded the Flames 46-24. Shalayne Nagel led six Tigers in double figures with 18 points, hitting 7 of 9 from the field.

CSM is back on the road for its next game Wednesday, as it faces GPAC foe Mount Marty University in Yankton, S.D. at 6 p.m.
