Union football wins 21-3 at Thomas

Thomasville, Ga. – The Union Commonwealth University football team picked up a 21-3 victory at Thomas on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored on the game's opening drive, and never surrendered the lead.

The first touchdown of the contest occurred with 10:20 to play in the first quarter. UCU quarterback Bryson Grabowski connected with wide receiver Tony Norman on a 10-yard TD pass that capped off a nine-play, 66-yard drive.

With 12:15 to play in the second quarter, Grabowski scored off a two-yard touchdown run to give Union a 14-3 lead. The TD concluded a nine-play, 67-yard drive.

With 2:07 to play in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs put the game away with a 23-yard touchdown run by Taji Jackson. Jackson's TD occurred on an 11-play, 71-yard drive.

The Bulldogs tallied 19 first downs, while allowing 10. UCU recorded 291 yards of total offense, while allowing just 167 yards.

Union's defense held Thomas to 3-of-13 on third down and 0-of-4 on fourth down. Offensively, UCU was 9-of-18 on third down and 1-of-2 on fourth down.

The Bulldogs rushed for 5.2 yards per carry with 227 yards off 44 carries. The rushing attack was led by Jackson, who tallied 18 carries for 121 yards and one TD.

Kamron Smith led UCU in total tackles with five, while Samuel Hawthorne and Antonio Hopkins each recorded four.

The Bulldogs advanced to 1-2 on the season, while Thomas fell to 0-3. The Battle for the Brass Lantern is up next for Union. The Bulldogs play at Cumberlands on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 7:00 p.m.
