Sauer's big second half lifts women's soccer to draw at St. Mary of the Woods

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A pair of second-half Maggie Sauer goals helped Midway overcome an early deficit, as the Eagles rallied to force a 2-2 draw in a River States Conference women's soccer road match at St. Mary of the Woods Saturday.

Things started poorly for the Eagles, who found themselves trailing 2-0 just 7 minutes, 39 seconds into the game. But the defense was able to keep the Pomeroys off the scoreboard the rest of the way, with freshman keeper Ellis Kerns pitching a shutout after being inserted into the second half.

That opened the door for Sauer, who scored twice in a less-than-10-minute stretch. Her first goal was unassisted just 2 minutes, 57 seconds into the second half, with her second coming off an assist by Anna Kneisley in the 58th minute.

Saturday marked the second career multi-goal game for Sauer, who previously had a hat trick against West Virginia Tech on Sept. 29, 2022. Already the conference leader entering the day, the assist was Kneisley's 10th on the season.

Midway is now 5-8-2 overall with a 1-4-2 mark in the RSC. The Eagles have a week off before playing a non-conference home game against Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) on Oct. 26.

It will be the final home contest of the year for the Eagles, who will hold a senior day celebration prior to the 1 p.m. start time.
