
Late Game Shot Doesn't Fall; Wildcats See Season End in Quarterfinals
The Culver-Stockton women's basketball team had an opportunity to upset Grand View University but a 3-point attempt with under 10 seconds remaining didn't fall and the Vikings held on for a 63-59 victory in the quarterfinals of the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday night in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Wildcats, who were seventh seed in the tournament, trailed 34-32 at halftime but held the second-seeded Vikings to just nine points in the third quarter to take a 45-43 lead to the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was tight throughout with Grand View seemingly gaining control with a 59-54 lead with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
However, C-SC's Elly Bentley drained a 3-pointer to bring the deficit to within 59-57 with 28 seconds left. The Vikings split a pair of free throws to up the lead to three, but the Wildcats' Olivia Hopp was fouled with 25 seconds left and she knocked down both free throws to bring the Wildcats to within a point at 60-59.
C-SC fouled again the Vikings made just one of two free throws to take a two-point advantage with 22 seconds remaining to give the Wildcat an opportunity.
The Wildcats ran the clock down to under 10 seconds and then Misora Nambara found Hopp for an open 3-point attempt. However, it hit back iron and caromed out to the Vikings. After a foul, Grand View iced the game at the free throw line.
Bentley finished with a game-high 16 points to lead the Wildcats. Nambara was the only other Wildcat in double figures with 15 markers. Bentley and Katie Webb both grabbed six rebounds to lead C-SC in that category, while Avery Oetting had four assists and two steals.
The Wildcats concluded the 2024-25 campaign with a 13-16 overall record.
