Point Men’s Basketball outduels Blue Mountain in Home SSAC Play

WEST POINT, GA. (Nov. 21, 2024) - The Point University Men's Basketball team returned to the court for a home Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Blue Mountain Christian University where the Skyhawks breezed past the Toppers with a final score of 83-58. 

The Toppers opened the first half with an early lead of 10-5 as Blue Mountain attacked the paint through the opening minutes. Vince Graves woke up the gymnasium with a putback dunk from a missed three-pointer. Point followed with two consecutive layups from Antwon Ferrell and Brandon Kincaid to bring the score to 13-11. Blue Mountain began to stretch the floor with a three-pointer followed by two free throws. The Skyhawks continued to find their rhythm on the court as a layup from Jeremiah Smith and two free throws from O'Brien Watkins cut into the lead for Blue Mountain. The half continued with the Skyhawks taking the lead at the free throw line with two made shots from the charity stripe. As the Toppers looked to wipe the lead away, Sam Rees found his spot for the deep three-pointer to put Point ahead 29-27 with under three minutes left. Mike Evans used his strength and control to drive to the lane to convert the layup which sent the Skyhawks to the half with a 31-27 lead.  

Vince Graves opened the scoring column in the second half with a mid-range jumper that was nothing but net to extend the lead. The Skyhawks' plan to attack began to display as O'Brien Watkins added a three-pointer to bring their lead to 40-34. The Skyhawks took their biggest lead at 10 with Antwon Ferrell finishing with a shifty layup. Brandon Kincaid looked to use his strength on a layup but Vince Graves followed with his second poster putback dunk to keep the gymnasium hyped up. The offensive firepower continued to strike with Tanner Higgins entering the fray with a shot behind the arc. Blue Mountain looked to slow the Skyhawks down with a jump shot and two layups to cut into Point's lead with a score of 54-45. The Skyhawks did not let up as Antwon Ferrell began to show his range with a corner three-ball to extend the lead to 59-45. Ferrell followed with finding Tanner Higgins for his second triple of the half. Sam Rees followed with another triple and all of the confidence in the world to bring Point's lead to 17. The Skyhawks were able to continue stretching the floor with O'Brien Watkins scoring his second triple of the game to bring their lead to 22. Point used their second-half run to halt Blue Mountain from any chance to come back and take the win with a final score of 83-58.

Antwon Ferrell led with 25 Points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. O'Brien Watkins followed with 15 Points, one rebound, and one steal. Jeremiah Smith added 11 Points, eight rebounds and one block.
