The turnaround for the Pioneers started as SMC had a pair of 7-2 runs – one to end the first half and another to start the second half. Later in the final 20 minutes, Kenny Burns scored four in a row, Bryan Bayonne hit a 3-pointer against his former teammates to put SMC ahead for the rest of the game and for an 83-79 lead with 1:36 to play.
Spartanburg Methodist (5-9, 2-0 CAC) was led by Bayonne, who had 26 points to lead four Pioneers in double figures. Tavarez Lacey had a solid all-around game, scoring 17 points, grabbing 16 rebounds, dishing out five assists and blocking five shots. Burns added 19 and Isaac Gray had 15, who made 11 of 12 shots from the free-throw line in the win.
Florida National (2-12, 1-1 CAC) had three Conquistadors in double figures with Caelum Ethridge leading the trio with 24 points. Gary Adams added 23 and Jeremy Arnum had 14 in the loss.
Next, the Pioneers will wrap up its trip to the Sunshine State to face Florida College on Friday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
