Rio Grande Sports Information
OWENSBORO, Ky. - The University of Rio Grande dodged an opening set bullet and then pulled away over each of the final two sets for a 28-26, 25-21, 25-16 triumph over Brescia University, Friday night, in River States Conference women's volleyball play at the Moore Center.
The RedStorm improved to 13-4 overall and 2-0 in league play with the victory.
The host Bearcats, who were playing their RSC opener, dropped to 4-13 with the loss.
Rio Grande rallied from an early 5-2 deficit in set one, but had to survive a pair of Brescia set point chances - at 25-24 and 26-25 - before scoring the final three winners of the period.
Set two was tied as late as 15-15 before an 8-3 scoring spurt allowed the RedStorm to take control and, eventually, grab a commanding match lead.
The final stanza stayed close for a while as well after a kill by Brescia's Francisca Sousa had the Bearcats within 16-13, but Rio roared to life and hammered out nine of the final 12 points in the match to complete the sweep.
The RedStorm hit an impressive .295 for the match (51 kills, 18 errors, 112 swings) and were led by senior Amanda Rarick's (Canal Winchester, OH) match-best 17 kills.
Junior Elle McLoughlin (Zanesville, OH) added 40 assists, a solo block and two block assists in the winning effort, while sophomore Jenna Harrison (Gallipolis, OH) tallied 11 digs.
Callie Mason led Brescia with 12 kills, while Cheaney Archer had 28 assists and a pair of service aces.
Campbell McBride had 14 digs and two service aces of her own in a losing cause, while Jasmin Jones assisted on a trio of blocks.
The Bearcats finished with a .150 attack percentage (33 kills, 16 errors, 113 swings).
Rio Grande wraps up its weekend road swing on Saturday with a visit to Oakland City University for another RSC tilt.
First serve is set for 1 p.m. EST.
