Tigers crush Shock, improve to 16-0

Rarely does a college basketball game start before lunch on a Sunday. Because of an incoming winter storm, Georgetown and Washington Adventist did just that as a 1:00pm scheduled tip was moved up to 10:00am on Sunday. It made little difference to the Tigers as they rolled by the Shock, 113-76, to finish the non-conference slate undefeated.

2 early buckets from Dre Boyd and Jabrion Spikes, followed by a 3 from Darien Lewis, gave Georgetown a 7-0 start. A 3-point play off a Tae Dozier dunk pushed the lead to 12-5 at the 16:21 mark of the first half. Washington Adventist responded and twice got within a point of the Tigers. The last was at 15-14 before Jaquias Franklin stepped in and scored 4 straight. The Shock would never get closer the rest of the way. With a 23-21 lead, Aden Nyekan scored the next 5 to pad the lead once more with 8 minutes to go. Georgetown would go on to lead, 45-33, at halftime.

As Georgetown did to start the game, another 7-0 run began the 2nd half. 2 Dre Boyd baskets sandwiched a Tae Dozier three to pad the lead to 52-33. The Shock scored 6 straight to cut the deficit. Georgetown answered with an 8-0 run in a span of 1:04 to extend the lead to 21 at 60-39 with 16:45 to play. The final 2 buckets of the run were from Jabrion Spikes, who proceeded to score 12 straight for the Tigers to keep the Shock at bay. With a 68-51 lead and just over 12 minutes to play, the Tigers started launching from deep and could not miss. In a stretch of 3 minutes, 29 seconds, Georgetown hit 7 straight threes to blow the game wide open. Jaquias Franklin started the onslaught with the first 2. After an Aden Nyekan steal, Scotty Browning drilled a deep 3 from the right side. Hunter McCutcheon got in on the fun with a bomb from the left wing. Franklin, Gavin Stevens, and McCutcheon all hit to cap a 31-point explosion and give the Tigers an 89-58 lead with 8:56 to play. Gavin Stevens hit another 3 with 6:14 to play to cap the overall run at 33-11 for a 101-62 margin. With 1:17 to go, Owen Shee hit Georgetown's 12th three of the half to cap off the 113-point night.

The Tigers hit 10 of their 1st 12 threes in the 2nd half and 12 of 20 in total as they put up 68 points after halftime. They shot 64% overall in the last 20 minutes and racked up 18 assists with just 1 turnover. Jaquias Franklin led Georgetown on the day with 22 points. Jabrion Spikes scored 12 of his 17 in the opening stages of the 2nd half. Tae Dozier did a little of everything once again, finishing with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks. Gavin Stevens was a perfect 3-3 from downtown to finish with 11 points. Dre Boyd ended the day with 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

Georgetown now turns its focus to the Mid-South Conference. Up first is a road trip to Columbia, KY to battle Lindsey Wilson. Tip time on Thursday is slated for 8:30pm ET.
