Lady Koala Tennis Fall 6-1 to Pikeville; Away Match at Salem Cancelled

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Columbia College women's tennis team fell 6-1 at home to conference foe Pikeville University on Saturday on the Koala Courts.

The Koalas' top doubles team of junior Aniya Sims and senior Helena Jokanovic came up just short in their battle going down 6-3 at the top doubles line. Unfortunately, UP got the doubles point with two 6-0 wins at the #2 and #3 spots.

During the singles, Jokanovic pulled off the only win for CC as she outlasted her foe at the top line in three tough sets. Helena won the first easily 6-2 before Pikeville took the second set in a 7-6 tiebreak. Jokanovic then fought back and knocked off her foe in a 7-5 score in the third. Sims then put up a valiant effort at the #4 line but lost 1-6, 3-6. Junior Natalia Diaz then lost 0-6, 2-6 at the #2 spot while UP cruised to the rest of the wins.

Pikeville improves to 5-2 in the AAC and 10-3 overall. The Koalas fall to 7-6 overall with the loss and 2-6 in the conference while their next match at D-3 Salem College in NC was cancelled on Monday due to rain.

Columbia will next head on the road to Kentucky to battle Union College on Wednesday afternoon.
