
Jackets blanked at Cornerstone, 6-0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Following a week's rest from action, Defiance College women's soccer returned to the pitch Saturday and were dealt a 6-0 loss from the Cornerstone Golden Eagles at the CU Soccer Field.
The Yellow Jackets (0-15, 0-9 WHAC) were shut out for the 14th time this season. The Golden Eagles (7-5-2, 5-3-1 WHAC) remained unbeaten at home on their second straight shutout victory.
THE TURNING POINT
Cornerstone netted two quick goals in the first 2:37 of the contest from Gracie Gortmaker and Tori Woodwyk, but DC keepers Madison Hert and Taylor Osborne kept them off the board the remainder of the first half. The Golden Eagles started the second half strong with two more scores in the first 5:15 following the half when Arianna Brooks followed by a second goal by Gortmaker. Jada VanNoord chipped in with two goals later in the half during the 67th and 79th minute.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Cornerstone pressed heavily and poured in 57 shots on goal compared to two for the Yellow Jackets.
- The Golden Eagles' Gracie Gortmaker posted a five point performance on two goals and assisted Cornerstone's second goal of the contest.
- Defiance had single shots taken by Destiny Pier and Lexi Coward.
- Madison Hert and Taylor Osborne split time in the net. Hert made five stops over 22 minutes while Osborne saved 14 of 18 total shots faced to match a season-best for the third time.
UP NEXT
The Yellow Jackets play their final two home games next week, beginning with a Wednesday afternoon match versus Rochester Christian. Kickoff against the Warriors is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Winsper-Knobel Field.
