V-Hawks Fall in Season Opener

CHICAGO, Illinois – The Viterbo University Women's Soccer team lost their first conference matchup 0-2 on the road Tuesday evening against St. Xavier University. The V-Hawks fall to 3-3 (CCAC 0-1) while the Cougars rise to 3-3-1 (CCAC 1-1).  

The rain began to fall as the match kicked off Tuesday evening. The V-Hawks would remain on the defensive in the first minutes of the half Veerle Vreins recording a save in the 9th minute, though the Cougars would respond with a goal a short 23 seconds later. Rachel Kinney booted the first shot on goal of the match for the V-Hawks. VU took control of the ball with Brooke Clements leading the charge with two corner kicks and a shot on goal in the 19th minute. Hadley Dammer would look to score with a shot with 10 minutes remaining in the half. The V-Hawks outshot the Cougars 8-3 before going into halftime.  

Fouls were traded as the second half kicked off with cards handed out on both teams. Once again the Cougars would dominate on the offensive with Louisa Schreiber and Veronica Davila producing multiple saves for Vriens. The V-Hawks would not record a shot until the 82nd minute where Kelcie Karweick would land on goal giving the Cougars goalkeeper another save. In the final minutes of the match Clements would take a header though it would not be enough for the V-Hawks to score. Vriens would record one last save for the V0Hawks in the 89th minute keeping the score 0-2. 

The V-Hawks took10 shots with five landing on goal by four different players, Vriens recorded six saves of the eight shots on goal by the Cougars.  

The V-Hawks look to bounce back this Saturday, September 28 at Indiana University South Bend.
