AVE MARIA, Fla. – In the picturesque setting in southern Florida, Avila women's basketball took on the NAIA's No. 17 team, Dakota Wesleyan, on Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Ave Maria University.
A cold-shooting day from the Avila offense would not put up enough scoring to stay with DWU, as the Tigers won, 75-56.
The Eagles would shoot just 2-of-13 from three-point range in the contest and were led in scoring by Hannah Smith and Madilyn Melton, who put up 12 points each. Marlie Wright added 10 points of her own as the third Avila player in double-figures.
Avila would make it to the free throw line 23 times in the contest, knocking down 20 shots, its second time making 20 or more free throws in the last three games.
Dakota Wesleyan forced 13 Avila turnovers on the afternoon and put up 32 points in the paint to contribute to the win.
The Eagles are back on the court tomorrow afternoon at 3 PM CT, taking on Northwestern in Ave Maria, Fla.
