#10/#8 Jags fall to St. Thomas despite rally bid
The UHV baseball team tried to send the Riverside Stadium crowd home happy on Tuesday.
But despite multiple late rally attempts, the No. 10-ranked Jaguars fell to St. Thomas (TX), 11-8, in 10 innings – the team's first extra inning game this season.
After falling behind 8-7 in the top of the eighth, Terry Burrel III laced an RBI double to left-center to plate Xavier Ortega and tie the game.
With the game still knotted at 8-8 in the ninth, DeeAndre Torres was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs before Jean Michael Gonzalez struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Celts then plated three runs in the 10th inning to eventually win.
It was the first time this season UHV (25-4) lost when scoring eight runs or more after entering the day 13-0 in that scenario.
Of the season-high 11 runs allowed by UHV pitchers today, four were unearned as St. Thomas (9-7) was able to capitalize on five errors by the Jaguars.
Four Jaguars had multi-hit performances with Terry Burrel III leading the way with three hits. Torres, Gonzalez and Cristian Garcia each had two RBIs.
With a pair of hits, Garcia extended his on-base streak to 29 games.
Jacob Baker was charged with the loss, marking just the second time the sophomore reliever from Cuero has been on the hook this season.
The Jaguars aim to bounce back this weekend with a road trip to Louisiana Christian this weekend. The three-game Red River Athletic Conference series kicks off with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
