Cedar Rapids, Iowa--The Statesmen women's soccer team claimed a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Mount Mercy in Heart of America Athletic Conference play Saturday.
WPU (2-3-5, 0-2-2 Heart) were outshot by Mount Mercy (0-5-3, 0-2-2) by an 11-8 deficit.
William Penn scored first when Isa Pietrangelo (Grad., Curitiba, Brazil, Master's of Sports Management) crossed the ball to Lilly Cote (Jr., Sioux City, Iowa, Psychology), who headed the ball past the goalkeeper at the 32:52 mark.
Unfortunately, the Mustangs found the back of the net to tie the match in the 66th minute. Despite, the Statesmen attempting to score five more times, they were unable to break the tie.
Cote led William Penn's offensive effort with four shots. Alessia Piombo (So., Traverse City, Michigan, Business Management), Lina Regadane (So., Ijmuiden, Netherlands, Business Management), Sian Bah (Jr., London England, Political Science), and Luca Szucs (Sr., Gyor, Hungary, Exercise Science) also all managed one attempt apiece.
Madeline Danielson (Sr., La Crescent, Minn., Biology) made five saves to limit MMU's scoring.
"Today was a disappointing result," said Head Coach Kaleb Preston. "That is now the fifth draw of the season where we were leading and then gave up a goal in the second half. We need to remember that it takes a full 90 minutes to earn a result that we are satisfied with."
