
The Bulldogs shutout St. Andrews in road win
Laurinburg, N.C. – The Union Commonwealth University football team won 21-0 at St. Andrews on Saturday. The Bulldogs tallied 262 total yards of offense, while allowing just 135.
Union's first touchdown of the game occurred with 1:23 to play in the first half. The 13-play, 94-yard drive was capped off with a two-yard TD run by Taji Jackson.
UCU's second TD occurred on a 11-play, 62-yard drive that was concluded with a six-yard TD run by Jackson. Union led 14-0 with 14:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The game's final touchdown occurred with 3:14 to play in the fourth quarter following an interception by Union DB Brayon Farley that was returned to St. Andrews' five-yard line. The Bulldogs needed just two plays to convert the INT into points as Jackson scored on a five-yard TD run.
Jackson registered 20 carries for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Jackson also tallied two catches for 35 yards. Jackson's 161 rushing yards ranks sixth in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) history. In Union's 44-0 win over Kentucky Christian last season, Jackson rushed for 162 yards.
Defensively, UCU totaled 13 TFLs for 76 yards and five sacks for 46 yards. The Bulldogs also tallied one interception, three forced fumbles, and four pass breakups.
Union held St. Andrews to 1.7 yards per rush to go with a total of 60 passing yards. Kam Bradshaw, Samuel Hawthorne, Antonio Hopkins, and Byron Gee each recorded six total tackles.
The Bulldogs are now 2-4 (1-1 AAC) this season, while St. Andrews is 0-4 (0-1 AAC). Up next for UCU is a home football game against Pikeville on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7:00 p.m. It will be Union's only home night game of the season.
