Lacrosse pulls away from Bethel for 2nd win
After 2 tight losses in Michigan over the weekend, Georgetown Lacrosse returned home on Tuesday night looking to get back on track. After a slow start against Bethel (IN), the Tigers gradually found their way in a 13-7 win.
The evening looked promising out of the gates as Melanie Wieland found the back of the net just 55 seconds into the game. It was the lone bright spot early on as the offense struggled for much of the quarter. Bethel scored a tying goal at the 12:07 mark and then took a 2-1 lead after another goal with 7:15 left. With a woman-up advantage after a Pilot green card, Hannah Voss took a free position shot with 4:19 to go in the 1st and easily beat the Bethel goalie to tie the game at 2 heading to the 2nd quarter.
Bethel retook the lead with 9:41 to play in the 2nd at 3-2. Madison Diaz struggled to find space most of the night as she was a focal point of Bethel's defense. With 7:35 on the clock in the 2nd, Diaz worked her way through traffic on a feed from Katerina Gilbert and fired the ball home to tie the game at 3. The Pilots again took the edge just 41 seconds later for a 4-3 lead over Georgetown. Katerina Gilbert answered right back at the 6:00 mark off a free position to tie the game at 4. Bethel took the lead once more with 4:29 to play at 5-4. Gilbert had the answer again just 28 seconds later for the tie. Aubree Lair got in on the action just 20 seconds after Gilbert's tying goal with 1 of her own off an assist from Hannah Voss to put Georgetown ahead, 6-5. Lair added another with 2:28 to go to give the Tigers a 7-5 halftime lead.
Bethel scored just 90 seconds into the 3rd quarter to get back within a goal. It was their only tally of the 3rd as Georgetown's team defense put the clamps on the rest of the way. The defense turned energy into goals as Georgetown put 3 more on the board in the 3rd. Hannah Voss put the first up with 7:51 to play. Aubree Lair followed just 32 seconds later. Katerina Gilbert had the punctuation as she fired a free position shot home with just 16 seconds left in the 3rd to give Georgetown a 10-6 lead after 3.
Gilbert kept her roll going in the 4th as she scored from Madison Diaz with 9:24 to go. Her 4th of the night gave Georgetown a 5-goal lead. Hannah Voss scored her 3rd of the night with 7:51 to play off a feed from Gilbert for a 12-6 lead. The biggest roar of the night came with 5:43 to play as Georgetown's defense got a stop and sent the team in transition. Katerina Gilbert worked her way down the right side and into a 2-on-1 against the Bethel goalie. Instead of taking the shot, Gilbert dished off to Sydney Dumaurier, who fired home her first career goal to give Georgetown a 13-6 lead. Bethel got a late goal back for the final margin.
Katerina Gilbert continues her torrid start to the 2025 season. With 4 goals and 4 assists on this night, Gilbert is up to 23 goals and 16 assists through the first 6 games of the season. Hannah Voss finished with a hat trick, assist and 4 draw controls. Aubree Lair also scored 3 times with an assist in the win.
Georgetown looks to ride the momentum into the start of AAC play on Saturday. The Tigers host Montreat in the conference opener at Toyota Stadium starting at 1:00pm.
