Wildcats Start Fast But Drop First Two Matches at St. Ambrose Invitational

The Culver-Stockton men's volleyball team got off to fast starts in each of its two season-opening matches Saturday afternoon but couldn't carry that momentum to a victory Saturday afternoon in Davenport, Iowa.

The Wildcats captured the first set in its season opener against Oakland City University but then dropped the next three sets to fall 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-15. In its next match against Saint Ambrose University, the Wildcat won the first two sets before succumbing 26-28, 22-25, 25-20, 25-21, 15-7.

Zach Kowalewicz led the offensive attack for the Wildcats against Oakland City with a team-high  11 kills. Kowalewicz registered a 50 percent attack percentage with just two hitting errors on 18 chances.

Clyde Harold chipped in with eight terminations while Henry Reeves and Malachi Gnade totaled six kills each. Owen Randle and Matt Reese combined for 37 set assists with Owen recording 19 helpers.

Defensively, C-SC garnered 10 team blocks with Rio Victor tallying six blocks and Kowalewicz four blocks. Reese, Gnade and Randle all recorded five digs to lead the Wildcats in that category.

In their second match, the Wildcats placed two players in double figures in kills with Gnade having 11 and Harold 10 terminations, respectively. Kowalewicz added eight kills while Randle had 21 set assists.

On the defensive end, Kowalewicz garnered five block assists while Harold had one solo block and three block assists. Cikeng Lee and Randle led the back row with 12 and eights digs, respectively.

The Wildcats (0-2) will get another crack at Saint Ambrose next Friday, Jan. 31, when they face the Bees in the first match of the Heart of America Challenge at Missouri Baptist University in St.Louis, Mo. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
