Cougars Stay Hot in 3-1 Victory over St. Francis (Ill.)

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) women's soccer team earned their third consecutive win to begin the season with a 3-1 victory over the visiting St. Francis (Ill.) Fighting Saints on Sunday, August 25. 

The Fighting Saints fired off three shots in the opening minutes of Sunday night's game. The Cougars were able to take possession, firing off two shots of their own before sophomore Jaylin Carroll put the Cougars on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal in the 18th minute. Courtney Tobin netted her second goal of the season in the 21st minute to put USF up 2-0. USF and St. Francis (Ill.) battled for the remainder of the first half, with the Cougars able to hold off the Fighting Saints to take a 2-0 advantage at the half. 

Ariadne Gonzalez found the back of the net to put the Fighting Saints on the board and cut the Cougars' lead to one in the 49th minute of action. A header from Jaylin Carroll in the 62nd minute would make the score 3-1 in favor of Saint Francis, with Courtney Tobin picking up her first assist of the season. The Cougar defense would hold off the Fighting Saints to secure the 3-1 victory and improve to 3-0 on the season. St. Francis (Ill.) fell to 0-1-1 on the season.

As a team, USF had nine shots, six of which landed on goal. Carroll led the Cougars with four shots on goal and is leading the team with three goals so far this season. Kayden Tassler earned her third win in goal after collecting three saves and holding the Fighting Saints scoreless through the first 45 minutes of action. Rachel Bova also had three saves for the Cougars in the second half. 

Up next, USF women's soccer (3-0) will travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan for a matchup against Cornerstone University on Friday, August 30. The Cougars will return to Bishop D'Arcy Stadium on Wednesday, September 11 for a non-conference game against Trinity Christian College.
