
WAU Women’s Basketball Falls to #17 NCAA Division III Johns Hopkins
Baltimore, MD – The Washington Adventist University (WAU) women's basketball team faced a formidable challenge on Monday, December 2, falling to top-ten ranked NCAA Division III Johns Hopkins University, 96-71, in Baltimore, Maryland.
The Blue Jays, known for their high-powered offense, quickly set the pace in the first quarter, building an early lead. Despite the deficit, the Shock showed resilience, with standout performances from Isabella Lujan-Gonzales and Amani Ball, who scored a team-high 18, and Bethany Fowler, who added 13 points and six rebounds.
WAU tried to find their rhythm in the second quarter, but Johns Hopkins' sharp perimeter shooting and strong play in the paint extended the gap to 17 at halftime.
The Blue Jays continued to pull away in the third quarter, capitalizing on turnovers and converting them into fast-break opportunities. Despite the uphill battle, WAU continued to fight, with Deryanis Colon Velez contributing eight points and six rebounds. Forcing the Shock into 20 turnovers, John Hopkins sealed the 96-71 victory at the final buzzer.
The Shock shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, with four of its makes coming from long range. Lujan-Gonzales led the Shock in scoring finishing with 18 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals, along with Ball who also contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Fowler (13), Colon Velez (8), Queen (6), Melanie Aguilar (4), Abby Bryant (3), and Ariyanna Gross (1) also found the scoring column. Nine Shock players saw time on the floor.
The loss moves WAU to a 5-6 on the season. The Shock will prepare for their next matchup against Christendom College in Front Royal, VA on Wednesday, December 4.
