WVU Tech flexes muscle in series finale win over RedStorm

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Broedy Boyce homered twice and drove in seven runs, while Noah Lukas clubbed a two-run home run of his own to lead West Virginia University Tech in an 11-2 rout of the University of Rio Grande, Saturday afternoon, in River States Conference baseball action at Bob Evans Field.
The Golden Bears, who divided Friday's doubleheader with the RedStorm, improved to 7-13 overall and 3-6 in the RSC with the win.
Rio Grande slipped 11-14 overall and 4-2 in league play with the loss.
Tech took a 1-0 first inning lead on a run-scoring hit by Boyce and extended its cushion to 3-0 in the fourth on Lukas' two-run homer.
Boyce cracked a three-run home run in the fifth to stretch the Golden Bears' advantage to 6-0 and, after Rio scored twice in the seventh, Tech plated five more markers in the ninth - including three on Boyce's second longball of the contest - to set the final score.
Logan Spurlock also had three hits, including a double, in the victory for WVU-Tech.
Tate Martino started and got the win for the Golden Bears, allowing three hits and a run over six innings. He walked two and fanned nine.
Braeden Pakkala earned a save, allowing one hit and one run over three innings of relief.
Senior Gabe Carter (Huntington, WV) started and lost for Rio Grande, surrendering three hits and four runs in 4-1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out two.
Senior Waskar Martinez (Santiago, D.R.) went 2-for-3 and freshman Zander Ervin (Jackson, OH) drove in a run in the loss for the RedStorm.
Rio Grande returns to action on Tuesday in a non-conference game at Bluefield (Va.) University.
