Johnson Leads V-Hawks in Win
LAWRENCE, Kans. – The Viterbo University Women's Basketball team took down their final matchup of the Haskell Invitational Saturday afternoon Haskell Indians Nations University 73-62. The V-Hawks improve to 5-1 while the Eagles fall to 2-8.
Nicole Johnson would help open the game with four of the opening eight points, though the V-Hawks would struggle to maintain possession. Pearla Teko-Folly would find back to back layups ending the first quarter.
The V-Hawks, starting at a deficit would respond with Johnson capitalizing under the hoop. Emily McCurdy, a weapon on defense would force turnovers converting into baskets closing the gap 33-31 at the half.
Olivia Lambrigtsen driving for the lane would score four of the next 12 for the V-Hawks taking the lead over Haskell. With 25 seconds remaining in the quarter Macy Stellner would draw a foul, then sinking both free throws to widen the lead.
The V-Hawks looking to take a larger lead would work hard, Stellner grabbing an offensive rebound drawing a foul would score six of the V-Hawks points in the first five minutes. Johnson working in the paint would nab her own rebounds and score a layup followed by a jumper with only minutes remaining in the game.
Stellner led the V-Hawks with 16 points and Johnson had 15 points. Angela Astorga led the Fighting Indians with 17.
The V-Hawks were outshot from the floor 48.8-42.4% and from three 33.3-25.9%, though the V-Hawks outrebounded 39-28.
The V-Hawks return to action Wednesday, November 20, at Holy Cross to open conference.
