Men's Basketball Uses Defense to Smother No.14 Morningside

Men's Basketball hosted No. 14 Morningside on Saturday afternoon in Crete. The Tigers held the Mustangs without a field goal in the last 4:22 of the game and posted a 64-57 upset of the Mustangs.

Doane primarily used a zone defense and the Mustangs struggled to find their touch, shooting a season-low 36.5-percent from the floor (19-of-52). They also shot a season-low 16.1-percent from behind the arc (5-of-31). Meanwhile, Doane shot 44.9-percent from the floor (22-of-49) with five made 3-point baskets.

The game started slow on the offensive end of the court with Morningside leading 4-3 after six minutes of play. Glavine McDonald made a 3-point basket for the Tigers to start a 7-0 run. The Tigers built their lead to 13 points, 26-13, with four minutes to play in the opening half. The Mustangs finished strong and cut the Tiger lead down to seven points at the break, 32-25.

Doane was able to push their lead back to 12 points early in the second half, 40-28 with 15:33 to play. Morningside followed with a 10-2 run to pull within four points. With Doane leading 49-45 with 8:32 to play, the Mustangs held the Tigers scoreless for nearly two minutes and went on a 5-0 run to take their first lead since early in the first half. Doane came back with a 5-1 run to regain the lead, 54-51 with 4:40 to play, and never looked back. McDonald and Elson Blanding sealed the win with four made free throws in the final 37 seconds.

Jack Wilson joined McDonald in leading the team with 14 points apiece for the game. Brady Timm added 12 points. Caleb Hrabik pulled down eight rebounds with Timm finishing with seven. Timm led the team with six assists in the game while Casen Chaney and McDonald posted two steals apiece to lead the Tigers.

Joey Skoff led Morningside with 19 points. Aidan Vanderloo finished with 12 points and Brendan Buckley posted 10 points. Justin Sitti had five assists and five steals for the Mustangs.

Doane will be home again on Wednesday, January 8, when they host Concordia at 7:45 PM.
