Tigers honor Remy Williams with sweep of Memorial Invitational

Georgetown took on Benedictine (KS) in the finale of the 2024 Remy Williams Memorial Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers made Remy and his family proud as they came away with a 77-65 win to improve to 3-0 on the season.

After an opening Raven 3, Tae Dozier and Darien Lewis led a run of 8 straight points to send Georgetown to the lead 4 minutes into the half. Benedictine then made a charge to take a 13-10 lead with just under 13 minutes to go. Jaquias Franklin quickly tied the game with a long-range 3. Benedictine answered with another mini-run to take a 21-16 lead midway through the half. Franklin and Isaiah Mason brought Georgetown within 1 before the Raven hit a 3 to pad the lead to 24-20. The lead reached 30-24 with 3:28 to go in the half. From there, Benedictine would not hit a field goal the rest of the half. Georgetown slowly chipped away at the deficit. A free throw and 3 from Mason cut it to 2. 4 late points from Tae Dozier gave Georgetown a 35-32 halftime lead, despite BC hitting 8 threes in the half.

The 3-point tally went to 10 for Benedictine on the first 2 possessions of the 2nd half for a 38-35 Raven lead. After an Aden Nyekan bucket, the Raven hit another 3 and another after a lay-in from Jaquias Franklin. Benedictine took a 46-41 lead with 15:47 to go in the game. Georgetown's defense turned up the intensity here as the Raven went scoreless for 4 minutes, 29 seconds. In that time, the Tigers scored 13 unanswered to rocket to a 54-46 lead. The Friday trio of Andres Burney, Tae Dozier, and Jaquias Franklin scored 11 of those points to push the team ahead. Benedictine scored 5 straight to get within 54-51. Tae Dozier answered with 5 in a row. A following 3 from Franklin and jumper from Burney capped a 10-0 run for a 64-51 edge with 7:23 to go. From here, Benedictine never got closer than 11 points. Georgetown's lead reached as high as 17 en route to the 12-point win.

After 63 combined points on Friday, the Burney-Dozier-Franklin trio put 51 on the board on Saturday. As Geprgetown stretched the game out in the 2nd half, the 3 Tigers scored 31 of Georgetown's 42 points after halftime. Burney scored 12 of his 17 after halftime. He was part of a bench effort that put up 35 points and was +24 over the Raven. Franklin put up 10 of 15 in the final 20 minutes. Tae Dozier ended the night with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Benedictine hit 14 threes on the night compared to just 3 for Georgetown. The Tigers opted for inside domination and left the game with a 58-16 edge in points in the paint and a +11 margin on the glass.

Georgetown returns to Davis-Reid Alumni Gym on Thursday night against Indiana Southeast. Tipoff is set for 7:00pm.
