
Baseball Rallies to Win in Extra Innings
Baseball rallied late and earned an extra inning win to pick up the sweep over Midland to open GPAC play on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers won 5-3 in eight innings to improve to 15-2 on the season.
Logan Amick scored the first run of the game as he did in the opener, crossing the plate on a sacrifice fly. Sam Kwapnioski picked up the RBI. Midland scored two runs in the second inning to take their first lead of the day, 2-1. Doane answered back with a run in the third inning to tie the game. Carter Roth delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Amick. The Warriors took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly.
Midland maintained their one-run lead until the seventh inning as they spoiled a Tiger threat in the fifth inning. Doane had the bases loaded with no outs but were unable to come up with a run.
The Tigers started the seventh inning with an out but put the next two batters on base via a walk. Dane Kelsey pinch hit and delivered a single to drive in Carson Baker to tie the game. In the eighth inning, Doane took the lead on a bunt single by Roth as Aaron Vulcano scored after leading off the inning with a double. Later in the inning, Brayden Jones pinch hit and drew a bases loaded walk for the final run.
Riley Plummer started for Doane and went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Ethan Merk entered in the fifth inning with two runners on base with one out. He was able to strand both runners plus one of his own to end the inning. Merk went on to throw 3.2 innings in picking up the win. He allowed two walks and two hits while striking out four.
Doane had 11 hits and eight walks in the game. Three players had two hits apiece, Roth, Max Harris, and Gerald Nix. Amick led the team with two runs scored while Roth had two RBI.
The Tigers will be back home on Sunday, March 16, when they host Mount Marty at 1 PM.
