Women's Soccer Sunk by Late Goal in Season Opener

ATHENS, Tenn.- The women's soccer team was set to open their season on their home field on Saturday. A storm that featured heavy rain made a small change to that plan as the game had to be moved to their alternate field at Bicentennial Park. Once the change was made, the team hosted the Campbellsville University Tigers in a non-conference game.

Each team had offensive chances in the first half, but the defenses and goalkeepers kept the game in a scoreless tie as the halftime buzzer rang. Lisa Kirwan and Addison Smith had the shots for TWU in the first half.

Six minutes into the second half, the first goal of the game went on the scoreboard. The goal was scored by the opponents, giving them a 1-0 lead. Krista Eik Hardardottir made a quick strike to tie the game, scoring 12 seconds after the visitors' goal. The game remained tied until the 77th minute. Unfortunately, the visitors scored to break the tie, and shots by Hardardottir over the remaining time did not find the net, giving the opponents the 2-1 win.

TWU (0-1) will be at home again for their next game when they host Montreat College in their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) opener. The game is set for Saturday, September 7 at 3:00 p.m.
