WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT HOME TO KWU

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming off the heels of a big conference win last week, Avila women's basketball could not make it back-to-back victories, falling to Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, 88-45.

Thanks to the winter storm in Kansas City, this was Avila's first game action in eight days and the rust may have gotten to the Eagles.

The Coyotes led from the opening tip, outscoring Avila 56-21 in the first half.

In the game, Avila was led on the offensive end by 11 points from Madilyn Melton and 10 from Marlie Wright. Melton's 11 points were helped by a perfect 7-7 shooting from the free throw line.

The Eagles offense was unable to get it going in the game, shooting just 28 percent from the field and 11 percent from three-point range.

KWU won the battle down low, beating Avila in rebounds (45-22) and points in the paint (50-18).

Avila has a quick turnaround, facing Ottawa on Monday night – in a makeup for a weather-delayed game last week. Tipoff from Ottawa is slated for 5 PM. The Eagles will return to Mabee Fieldhouse on Wednesday night to take on Evangel at 5:30 PM.
